Planning Lead/Speaker: Dr Brenda Lau
WHO: BCAS Professional Education Committee
WHAT: Perimenopause typically begins around age 30, yet call schedules, standing case loads, and workplace norms across the perisurgical team—anesthesiology, surgery, OR nursing, and allied health—were never built with it in mind. With 82% of OR personnel reporting musculoskeletal pain, a staggering 70% of pain research based on male subjects, and only 5% of NIH funding targeted toward women’s health, an evidence gap exists for both our workforce and our patients.
In this session, Dr. Brenda Lau makes the case for a perisurgical environment that adapts to hormonal transitions across the lifespan. Grounded in evidence-based brain and bone protocols, Dr. Lau introduces three practical perioperative optimization questions designed for every provider to ask across every patient interaction—shifting our culture from passive awareness to active empowerment.
Learning Objectives
Occupational Health: Summarize unique work implications and systemic risks on anesthesiologists’ health, including occupational exposures and cognitive load.
Preventative Care: Describe evidence-based brain and musculoskeletal health strategies tailored specifically for female healthcare colleagues.
Clinical Optimization: Identify three actionable questions to improve perioperative optimization for women patients.
